Planner Pints No.16 at The George (Soho)

So, after last month’s Planner Pints accidental booking of a bar that fancies itself a night club on a Thursday… (Apologies guys) We’ve learnt our lesson and have managed to book a pub in Soho with a private function room. When they asked if we wanted the Karaoke set up we said, “No.”

The George is a solid pub. No frills. No surprises. Just the usual good chat you can expect from coming along and meeting other strategy folk. Oh and they do pizza.

Lazy Book Club #7 - Homo Deus by Yuval Noah Harari

We've wanted to cover Yuval Noah Harari's 'Homo Deus' for a while now. Earlier in the year we discussed 'Sapiens', which led to an awesome debate on human nature. Now, we want to focus the discussion not on the years that have passed, but on what's ahead for us. As humans... and as strategists.

As usual there’s only 10 spaces, so watch your inbox and RSVP to the email sharpish to nab a seat. The event will be happening at the Red Lion, 7pm on Tuesday 22nd August.

Q&A with Christian Barnett, Founding Partner of creative strategy agency Sword & Stone

Helping us make the month of June extra special is Christian Barnett, Founding Partner of the creative strategy agency, Sword & Stone. Jon Steel describes him better than we can:

“Working with Christian always reminds me why I wanted to be in this industry in the first place […] He’s not only an effective strategic and creative problem solver – he’s also an excellent leader and teacher. Many generations of WPP Fellows have benefitted from his mentorship.” (Jon Steel, Group Planning Director, WPP)

As usual we'll be running this as breakfast session with 10 of our members over at J&A Cafe in Farringdon/Clerkenwell.

If you want to come, email us (FAST) at hello@group-think.co.uk with the subject "Q&A WITH CHRISTIAN" (... or something more fun if you like)

Lazy Book Club #5 - Evil By Design

This month we'll be exploring how we can use principles of interaction design in other areas of strategy and marketing. The book, Evil By Design by Chris Nodder, has 7 chapters, each demonstrating how people have successfully used behavioural economics to effectively manipulate people to do what the experience needed.

So if that sounds interesting join us at  at The Red Lion, Hoxton Square at 7 PM on Tuesday 24th April,

As always don’t worry about reading the book unless you want to. We’re just laying out the principle learnings and then open up the conversation for everyone in the room (i.e. the pub table).

As usual, there’s only 10 spaces, so just RSVP to the invite email sharpish.

Reframing the problem

"Without a well defined problem, there is no strategy” said Richard Rumelt in Good Strategy Bad Strategy.

This month we are going to dive into the problem. What should you expect from clients, what is a well defined problem to get things done and a process to get there.

We’ll share concrete examples and get you to share your own experience to tailor the surgery as much as possible.

Spaces are limited to 10 people as per usual.

The mind surgery will be happening on Wednesday 19th of April somewhere in Shoreditch.
6:30-7pm: pre-operation drinks.
7-8:30pm: surgery.

Look our for the invitation email to book your operation.

Q&A with Tim Loo, Director of Experience Strategy @ Foolproof

As you know, part of Group Think's mission is to get different kinds of strategists and disciplines together to learn from one another. So for our 4th Q&A we’re proper excited to have Time Loo, the Executive Director of Strategy at Foolproof – an experience design agency you’ve already experienced. (Used a ticket machine on the tube? Ordered a pizza from Dominos? Booked a flight with easyJet? Gone on the Playstation Store? Yep.)

Tim also sits on the Advisory Board of the global UX STRAT, and if that’s not impressive enough he was also once on Master Chef. (No cooking questions though please – you’ve got the net for that.)

Look out for an invitation to breakfast next week, the 28th of March, 8-9am upstairs at J&A Café, 1-4 Sutton Ln, Clerkenwell, London EC1M 5PU (near Barbican/Farringdon).

Deep dive into the indie cafe industry with Assembly Coffee

Starbucks is dead, long live the indie cafe industry!

...  Ok maybe not.

Starbucks is not dead just yet but Britain is definitely becoming a nation of coffee connoisseurs. People are now treating it like wine – they want to learn how to taste it, where it's from, how it’s made…

The thirst and the desire to have better quality coffee has massively grown and this is why this month Open Your Mind is proposing you a deep dive into the specialty coffee market and vibrant cafe life; by introducing you to the Assembly Coffee team, a unique coffee roastery drawing invaluable insights on the independent cafe life and coffee drinkers’ needs.

And because these guys are oh so generous, we can propose you TWO different events based around the coffee sensory experience and an overview of the indie cafe industry and its associated insights.

On the agenda:
- Saturday cupping session at the Assembly Coffee roastery (Brixton).
On this coffee tasting session, the team will introduce us to the fine art of savouring a coffee, teach us how to identifying tasting notes and tell us how they branded the sensory experience of their unique blend with colours and brush strokes (yes brush strokes guys!).

- Weekday breakfast on indie cafe insights at Spiritland (King’s Cross).
At this early breakfast, Michael Cleland - Assembly Coffee’s co-founder and coffee strategist will run us through a series of invaluable insights on the opportunities and challenges of the specialty coffee, indie cafe needs and how to change coffee drinkers habits in a more and more crowded category.

If you’re interested to attend one or the other event (or even both!) watch out for your invitation emails!

Meet. Chat. Change.

Lazy Book Club #4 - The Inevitable

We’re covering a book about Artificial Intelligence. It’s called The Inevitable. Kinda ominous title, but I guess you’re better off facing that big wet cloud with an umbrella than just your skimpies. (London today anyone?)

In the book, Kevin Kelly (former editor of Wired) talks about the 12 inevitable forces that shape our technological world. After freaking ourselves out and covering our webcams with blue tac, we’ll discuss what the technological revolution has to offer to the business and marketing world.  Will we end up advertising to your phone's’ VPA who makes all your grocery decisions?

So if that sounds interesting, hop into your driverless cars and join us at  at The Bricklayers Arms 7 PM on Wednesday 1st March,

As always don’t worry about reading the book unless you want to. We’re just laying out the principle learnings and then open up the conversation for everyone in the room (i.e. the pub table).

As usual, there’s only 10 spaces, so just RSVP to the invite email sharpish.

What better way to embrace our inherent human laziness than to talk about a book that pretty much covers ‘the history of humankind’? We know, small task. And yes, it’s a big book. With some pretty big implications. Which probably one hour of discussion doesn’t do proper justice.
